Most brands that decide to start selling online in Thailand make the same assumption: open a store, list your products, and buyers will come.

They will not.

Selling online in Thailand in 2026 requires a specific set of things most guides do not tell you about. A legal entity. Thai-language content built for Thai buyer behaviour. A marketing budget from day one. And the patience to build an organic presence that takes at least a year to generate real traction.

Here is what starting selling online in Thailand actually looks like.

## The 3 Platforms You Need to Understand

Before setting up anything, understand that Thailand has three dominant ecommerce platforms — and they serve different purposes.

**Shopee** is the largest marketplace in Thailand with approximately 50% market share and over 40 million monthly visits. It is where the broadest range of Thai buyers search for products. For any brand that wants long-term organic growth in Thailand, Shopee is the primary channel.

**Lazada** has approximately 18% market share in Thailand and a buyer base that skews toward expats, premium buyers and international brands. For foreign brands entering Thailand, [Lazada often generates faster early traction](https://iboostonline.com/blog/selling-shopee-lazada-thailand-2026) because many international residents in Thailand prefer Lazada for its more accessible interface.

**TikTok Shop** has grown to approximately 32% market share in Thailand in 2025 — the fastest growth of any platform. TikTok Shop operates completely differently from Shopee and Lazada. It is video-first and algorithm-driven. You do not need followers. You need content that lands. This is a fundamentally different skill set from running a marketplace store and requires a separate strategy.

The most important question before starting is not which platform to choose — it is whether you have one person who can manage one platform well. A single person cannot manage three shops simultaneously and do it well. Start with one. Get it right. Then expand.

## What You Actually Need Before You Launch

**A Thai entity**

To sell on Shopee Thailand or Lazada Thailand as a standard marketplace seller, you need a Thai-registered company. This surprises almost every foreign brand entering Thailand — particularly those who assume they can sell cross-border from a Singapore or European entity.

A Thai company registration requires a business registration with the Department of Business Development, a Thai business bank account for receiving payouts in Thai Baht, and for regulated categories including food, cosmetics and health products, the relevant Thai FDA approvals.

The registration process takes four to eight weeks minimum. The realistic timeline from the decision to sell in Thailand to receiving the first real order — accounting for entity registration, bank account setup, platform onboarding, content production and store setup — is three to four months.

Start the entity process before you brief photographers. Before you confirm your product range for Thailand. Before you set a launch date. The entity is the critical path.

**Content built for Thai buyers — not translated for them**

Thai buyers do not buy from catalogues. They buy from stories. The brands winning on Shopee and Lazada in 2026 are not the ones with the most professional product photography on a white background. They are the ones whose listings tell a brand story, show the product in real Thai lifestyle contexts, and answer the specific questions Thai buyers ask before purchasing.

Thai buyers search in Thai. Your product titles need to be built around the keywords Thai buyers actually type into the Shopee or Lazada search bar — not translated from English titles. The auto-suggest function in the search bar shows you exactly what buyers are searching for in your category. Use those terms.

Beyond language, your images need to work at thumbnail size on a mobile screen — which is how the vast majority of Thai marketplace shopping happens. Test your main product image at thumbnail size next to your two closest competitors. If it does not stand out in two seconds, it will not get clicked.

**A marketing budget — but know your margin first**

The single most expensive mistake brands make when starting to sell online in Thailand is not investing in building a brand presence outside the shopping platforms. Discovery in Thailand happens on TikTok, Instagram and increasingly through AI tools like ChatGPT — not on Shopee. Shopee and Lazada are where the purchase happens. They can also be a place of discovery, but for most categories, new customers find brands through social and AI first, and then convert on the marketplace.

If you are only investing in your Shopee listing and your platform ads, you are invisible at every step before the purchase moment. Acquiring new customers through the platform alone becomes more difficult and more expensive every year as competition increases and fees rise.

Before allocating any marketing budget, calculate your real margin per order. Take your selling price and subtract platform commission — which varies by category but runs between 6 and 11% for most Mall and Non-Mall sellers — the 3% transaction fee, the approximately 5% free shipping subsidy if you offer free shipping, and your cost of goods and packaging. The number you are left with is your real margin. That number tells you exactly how much you can afford to spend acquiring each customer. For a full breakdown of every fee, read our guide on [Shopee and Lazada fees explained](https://iboostonline.com/blog/shopee-lazada-fees-thailand-explained).

Start with small, deliberate paid ads inside the platform. Build your organic ranking and reviews at the same time. Getting your first ten reviews from friends and family is not cheating — it is survival. The platform has no data on a new store, and reviews are the fastest trust signal you can give the algorithm.

## The First 90 Days Are Not a Soft Launch

Both Shopee and Lazada run an incubation period for new sellers. The platform tracks every performance metric from day one — shipping rate, chat response time, conversion rate, review score — and uses those metrics to set your long-term organic visibility.

Think about it this way. Have you ever been to the soft opening of a restaurant and had a bad experience? You probably never went back. That is exactly what Shopee does not want you to do to your customers. And it is exactly what the platform will remember about you as a seller. A bad first impression in the first 90 days is very hard to recover from.

The score you build in the first 90 days determines how much free organic traffic the platform gives you from month four onwards. Treat month one like your peak trading period, not like a trial.

The specific targets to hit: shipping fulfilment rate above 95%, chat response within 10 minutes during business hours, first ten reviews above 4.5, and conversion rate above 2% on key products.

## The Reality of Year One

Setting up a business is part of a long-term plan — and the same is true for ecommerce. Before you build genuine organic presence, you might already be a year in. This is the timeline most brands underestimate.

Month one to three is foundation building. Almost no results are visible. Month four to six brings the first signals — some rankings, some citations, low revenue. Month seven to nine is when compounding starts — which products work, which platforms pull. Month ten to twelve is when you finally have real data to make real decisions.

The most expensive mistake in year one is investing entirely in paid marketing without building any organic base. Paid traffic generates sessions that disappear as fast as they arrive. Organic presence — from SEO, from AI visibility, from consistent content — compounds over time. Ads stop the moment you stop paying. Organic traffic keeps working.

Ecommerce in Thailand is a long-term investment. The brands that treat it that way are the ones that are still growing in year three.

For brands that want to enter Thailand or Southeast Asia with a clear strategy and realistic expectations, the [iBoost Online store setup service](https://iboostonline.com/store-setup) covers entity guidance, Thai-language content, storefront setup, advertising setup and first sales and reviews.
